9 AM – 11:30 AM
Trainer: Jeff Mao, Wonder Workshop
Cost: $150 includes the robot/PD bundle

Let’s bring excitement and wonder to kids through robotics and coding with Dash and Dot. Learn why computer science and computational thinking skills are essential for all learners. Understand how to implement a computer science program that supports learning and critical thinking skills across the curricula. Participants will leave with the confidence that computer science for elementary-aged learners is appropriate and doable along with the knowledge of how it can be done, and where to find the resources necessary to do so. All participants will receive a PD Bundle (retail value $450) that includes a Dash robot and an online course enrollment to “Introduction to Coding and Robotics with Dash & Dot” as part of their registration fee.

Bring Wonder To Middle School Kids With Cue
12:30 – 3 PM

Take Apart Toys
9 AM – 11:30 AM
Trainers: Tina Coffey & Meg Swecker
Cost: $50 includes supplies

In this session, we will explore circuits and the physics of mechanisms while reverse engineering mechanical toys.  Unleash your inner mad scientist while combining different toy parts to design a completely new creature. Come see how we blend standards, creativity, and collaboration, with a whole lot of fun!  Join us as we make Frankentoys!

Surf the Digital Wave with eMedia VA
9 AM – 11:30 AM

Many teachers know that eMediaVA is a digital repository of over 153,000 learning objects, all searchable by SOL.  However, eMediaVA is much more. This hands-on session will focus on the advanced features of eMediaVA like uploading teacher created items, sharing curated collections with other teachers for collaboration, building assignments for students to access within eMediaVA, and tracking student progress.  The session will also walk participants through new features  – creating, sharing, and finding open educational resources within eMediaVA.  Find out how to ride eMediaVA and catch the OER digital wave.

PBS KIDS ScratchJr Code-to-Learn Professional Development Workshop
12:30 – 3:00 PM
Trainer: Annie Gilstrap
Cost: $25
The PBS KIDS ScratchJr Code-to-Learn PD is a 2.5 hour session where you will have an opportunity to play, explore, and learn how to incorporate creative coding and computational thinking into learning environments designed for 5-8 year-olds through the use of the PBS KIDS ScratchJr app and accompanying activities and materials.

PBS KIDS ScratchJr is a free app developed in collaboration with the MIT Media Lab, Tufts University’s Developmental Technologies Research Group, and PBS KIDS. Available on iPads, Android tablets, and Amazon Tablet, the app helps children ages 5-8 learn core coding concepts and practices as they create their own interactive stories and games. As kids snap together colorful programming blocks to make their favorite PBS KIDS characters move, jump, dance and sing, they will learn to solve problems, design projects and express themselves creatively with technology.

The training will introduce you to developmentally appropriate coding and computational thinking concepts and practices through the use of the PBS KIDSScratchJr app. You will gain experience using the tool and will explore a curriculum designed for informal learning environments that helps support children through the creative design process by providing opportunities to imagine, explore, plan, create, and share their creativity and use of the media and technology.

This is a BYOD event. Please come with the PBS KIDS ScratchJr app loaded on your Android tablet, iPad or Amazon Tablet. We will have some loaner iPads at the training.  NOTE: ScratchJr is available on Chromebooks.  ScratchJr is the same as PBS Kids ScratchJr, but does not include the PBS characters. http://pbskids.org/scratchjr
